Weekend Gluten Free, Celiac and Nutrition Roundup-The eclectic edition

Happy Fall everyone!
It sure doesn’t feel like it here in SoFL, we’re still hot and humid. Well, it is still hurricane season.
Onto the linkage!
- As a reminder, if you haven’t already signed up for the FREE “Gluten Free Effect on Athletes-Improving Performance through Diet” presented by yours truly (yes, that’s free) webinar hosted by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness on Tuesday 9/21 you still have a couple days. Already there’s been submissions of great questions. Whatever questions I do not get to during the actual webinar I’ll be answering in a future episode of the GFF podcast, so never fear. Sign up and join in the fun!
- Why I’m not Afraid of Salmonella @ Food Renegade-As I get my eggs from local chickens (yes, literally, I’m fortunate enough to have a local market where they raise their own chickens and they have the most beautiful yolks-but I digress) the salmonella eggs recall did not directly impact me, but it made me mad. Speaking of which, if you are even remotely politically inclined, please check out the bill that will be up for vote soon “Food Safety” S. 510. I will not get up on my soapbox here, but I am all for being able to make my own educated choices about my food and where it comes from, and do not trust the FDA to make those decisions for me. Check it out, read about it, make your own decision and speak your mind to your senators if you feel moved.
- High Fructose Corn Syrup: Tasty Toxin or Slandered Sweetener?-Science Based Medicine-A logical look at HFCS and other sweeteners. Bottom line, people-use less of all of it. Our tastebuds have become accustomed to stupidly high levels of sweetness and artificially enhanced flavor. Back away from the agave…slowly…slowly…keep your hands where I can see them.
- Melissa Diane Smith, who was my last guest on the GFF podcast, wrote an article on “Against The Grain Athletes.” And hey, she mentions me! Check it out for more of Melissa’s straightforward and sensible advice. And if you missed my original articles on Gluten Free Athletes, check out Part 1 and Part 2 that I posted back in March. (Before the recent influx of articles about gluten free athletes, son!)
- Speaking of which, sports nutritionist Monique Ryan takes on Anti Inflammatory and Low Gluten Diets for Cyclists. This is one of the better articles I’ve seen lately, and address celiac disease in an appropriate way, in my opinion.
- I recently came across Diane @ Balanced Bites. She has a great blog, addresses food allergies and intolerances, and does it with a maximal nutritive value in mind. I really liked this post “We’ve Been Fed a Pyramid Built of Processed Food Bricks” Great read. Do it. Cliffs notes-eat food that requires the most minimal processing in order to eat it.
- And lastly for this week, a rant. Because we all deserve, no, we all NEED a good rant every now and again. This one really resonated with me because I am 36 years old. I have ovarian insufficiency likely as a secondary effect of celiac disease. I am going through perimenopause, and it sucks. And I cannot believe I have potentially 10 more years of this. So when Mistress Krista over at the Stumpblog posted “I’m Not Old, I’m 37″ it spoke to me. I laughed, and I practiced my Kegels. Ladies, I think you will all get a kick out of it. Guys, Krista could kick your butt, so you better read it. There is a ton of awesome content over on the Stumpblog, so settle in and read for a bit.
Everyone have an awesome week!

Erin, once again another great collection of information here! Thanks for putting this all together! I especially appreciated your link to “I’m Not Old, I’m 37″. I am 37 and although I do not have ovarian insufficiency, I know my body was really screwed up for a while before I went gluten free and started eating the way I do now. I had one miscarriage before my first son and the 3 more miscarriages before my second. Now I know I am in a much better place, but that post had me cracking up and I wondering if I am in perimenopause as well.
Great post, my friend!

Kim,
I know, I was sitting here laughing, almost crying because I could SO relate. So sorry to hear about your miscarriages, I can only imagine how difficult that must have been. I hesitated a bit to mention my own issues, everyone has their own challenges and I certainly didn’t want it to be “TMI” but I think there are many others out there who can relate and appreciate that they are far from alone.
Welcome to the club, sista!
Hey Erin,
Sorry I missed your NFCA webinar. I unfortunately had a schedule conflict. But I read through the PDF of the slides, and it looked great! Thanks for helping to spread and share your knowledge for athletes! The big race is tomorrow morning…I’m so ready to race! Enough preparation, let the games begin!
Cheers, Pete
Thanks Pete!
So excited to watch your progress tomorrow-what an accomplishment to just have gone through your training.
Enjoy!
